Himmat Shah: Sculpture
10 - 22 May 2007
Private view and book launch:
Wednesday 9 May, 6-8pm
New bronze sculptures by Himmat Shah (b.1933).
He was a member of the 1890 group,
which emerged in the wake of the Indo- China war, led by J. Swaminathan. The then prime minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru opened its first show, in 1963. The group was soon dismantled, but the artist continued with his own agenda.
Himmat Shah designed and executed monumental murals in brick, cement and concrete at St. Xaviers school Ahmedabad 1967- 71. Since then he started working on relief and sculpture in plaster, terracotta and ceramics. |
His art explores materiality, texture and the question of presenting reality. It internalises the built-in obsolescence of consumerist society. His gilded objects of clay, sculptures have the traces of paintings on them and the hieroglyphs of antiquity gouged on to series of heads placed side by side rhythmically like the metal plates of a xylophone. There are those self-mocking elements, crumbling and decaying.
The artist lives and works in New Delhi.

Keith Vaughan: Paintings and Drawings
24 May - 23 June 2007
The gallery has assembled an exceptional collection of over 60 oils, works on paper and drawings, some generously lent by private collectors from around the world. Many of the works have not been seen on public display for many years and include key works such as the Assembly of Figures I, VI and VII and March Landscape. They provide a unique insight into the work of an artist who has maintained a position of profound respect amongst experts in the Modern British period.

Famous for his male nudes and landscape paintings, with the signature concentrated blue taking a principal place in his works of the 60s and 70s, Vaughan was a man of reserve, with a contemplative nature, who struggled with his sexuality and who died an early death in 1977. Counted amongst those of the Neo-Romantic movement, he is now recognised as one of Britains greatest artists of the post-war era.
This is the artists first London gallery show since 1990. Much of the work in this exhibition will be for sale.
The extensive 88 page exhibition catalogue includes over 60 colour plates of the works on display in the exhibition plus a new essay and further text on the artist.
Cost: £15 plus p&p
