GEOFFREY EASTOP
MEN AND MONOLITHS
New work in stoneware
2 December - 31 December
Private View: Thursday 1 December 2005, 6-8pm
From 1949 - 1952 Geoffrey Eastop trained as a painter at
Goldsmiths College, London and at the Academie Ranson,
Paris.
In the early 1950s the economic difficulties of the time
compelled him to find work as a potter, first at the Odney Pottery in Cookham and later with Alan Caiger-Smith in Aldermaston. In 1969 he began a long and rewarding collaboration with the painter John Piper. Pipers requirements being strictly from a painters point of view enabled Geoffrey to move in the direction he was aiming at whilst remaining free to develop his own forms. In addition to this he was encouraged to use strong vibrant colours which few potters were using at the time.
Eastop has used a wide variety of techniques, materials, glazes, styles and sizes - from small pots to large architectural works. |
His work is exhibited at the Victoria and Albert Museum in
London and the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, and has been shown at many exhibitions around the world.
The emphasis on my work is now sculptural in character. My intention by using a personal hand building method, is to construct forms which have wider implications beyond the immediate appearance of the objects themselves.
This new work by Geoffrey is the result of a long and innovative period of development. The artist continues to produce new forms that are derived from the structure and surface character of walls, using a unique hand-building technique. More recently forms have taken their origin from rocks and distinctive partfigurative stone shapes.

Berkeley Square Gallery
Indian Series
K M Adimoolam
New Paintings and Book Launch
14 December 31 December
Private View and Book Launch: Wednesday 14 December 2005, 6 - 8pm |
This is the 4th and final exhibition in our Indian series for 2005,
following on from the sell out S H Raza, Manu Parekh and Krishen Khanna shows.
K M Adimoolam was born in 1938 in Tiruchirapalli in Tamil, Nadu
but moved to Chennai in 1959. There, under the influence of the sculptor Dhanapal, he enrolled in the School of Arts and Crafts.
It is colour which fascinates K. M. Adimoolam and it is this that he uses to interpret nature, making his paintings abstract renditions of the natural world through colour.
My canvases are neither representative of nature nor the perception of my mind. My works are not bound with words; they are purely concerned with vision. A vision that tries to reveal some untold truths from Nature, he adds. It is a truth told through hues that undulate across the canvas.
Adimoolams canvases partake of his inner energy and vision, emerging as an extension of his mind that seems to put down colour without referring to the artist himself. That is the main reason for the spontaneous and untrammelled quality of Adimoolams canvases that carry the viewer into a journey through space.
Berkeley Square Gallery will continue their relationship with Saffronart next year.
