Masterpieces of Modern British Art
Selected works from The Derek Williams Trust and Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales
Private View: Tuesday 8 January, 6 - 8pm
9 January - 9 February
Derek Williams (1929 - 1984) was a Cardiff based collector who left his collection of British Modern Art on loan to Amgueddfa
Cymru - National Museum Wales. His Trustees subsequently formed The Derek Williams Trust, a charity with the purpose of
acquiring works of art from 1900 to the present day for public display.
This loan exhibition includes works from both the museum and the trust - major paintings by Leon Kossoff, Frank Auerbach,
David Hockney and Bridget Riley bought by Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Wales with generous support of The Derek
Williams Trust, and purchases made by the trust - among them works by Craigie Aitchison, Howard Hodgkin, Gillian Ayres and
Sean Scully.

Kristian Krokfors
14 February - 3 March
Private View: Wednesday 13 February, 6 - 8pm
Kristian Krokfors (b 1952) was born in Finland. From 1973-74 he studied Art at the University of Industrial Arts in Helsinki before
moving to England in 1974 to study at Leicester Polytechnic, where he received his BA in 1977. From 1977-78 he completed the
Advanced Printmaking Course at Croydon College of Art before returning to Helsinki, where he currently lives and works. In 1985
he was named Finland’s Young Artist of the Year, a prestigious national event organised by the City of Tampere and the Tampere
Art Museum. From 1988-90 he spent two years living and working in New York City. In 2001 he returned as artist-in-residence
under the auspices of the Finnish Foundation for the Visual Arts, the Cultural Institute for Finland in the USA.
His graphic landscapes are ordered and serene, the light and shadow defined, the shapes clean and sharp. He has worked in
Andalucía and both this memory and also his childhood home of south west Finland may have played some part in these
stylised landscapes, while the pared down symbols of houses and trees lend anonymity to the places he depicts. |
