ANTHONY WHISHAW RA: DOWN STREAM

17 October - 15 November

A reception for the artist will be held at the gallery on Wednesday 7 November, 6 - 8pm

Born in London in 1930 Anthony Whishaw studied at Chelsea College of Art between 1948 and 1952 afterwards winning a Royal College of Art Travelling Scholarship. His early work grew from an admiration for Picasso, the Cubists and especially Goya’s Black paintings.

In the early 1980s a crucial turning point came with a series of works which attempted to reconcile opposing elements. As Whishaw explains: ‘I became increasingly intrigued by paradox- visual irony- the combination of opposites ie; reality/illusion/allusion, abstraction / figuration, past / present, surface/depth, all contributing to the overall idea I wanted to produce, an image in the process of making itself visible on the very edge of perception, an unique autonomous entity although related to or part of a series.’
