This exhibition marks the culmination of a year of intensive activity for Sean Henry. Twelve months ago, Couple, his critically acclaimed pair of large-scale bronze figures, was installed off the North East coast at Newbiggin by the Sea in Northumberland – the UK’s first permanent offshore sculpture. This was followed by an ambitious, multi-figure, indoor installation at the new premises of Standard Chartered Bank in the City of London.
The exhibition will feature new works that vary in scale from Woman (Being Looked At) a 2.6 meter high painted figure, to Folly - a 1:8 scale model of a new building & sculptural installation that Henry is currently creating for the Scheringa Museum in Spanbroek, Northern Holland (illustrated opposite). Describing the psychological intensity that Henry draws from sculpting ‘ordinary human figures’ the author Tom Flynn says of Folly:
“Entering this strange, dream-like space could be as disorientating as accidentally straying onto a stage during a play. What is this place? Who are these people and what, if any, is the connection between them?”

Sean Henry by Tom Flynn
This is the first major monograph on Sean Henry, featuring
stunning photography of his sculptures and drawings from the
artist’s own archives, with additional comparative illustrations,
and an illuminating critical text by the art historian and
journalist Tom Flynn. After an initial chapter exploring Henry’s
background and influences - especially the work of the
pioneering American “funk ceramicist” Robert Arneson - Flynn
considers the full range of Henry’s work from four different
viewpoints, in successive chapters: Technique and Scale;
Colour and Realism; Theatricality: and Location and
Environment. The book also includes an illustrated catalogue
of Henry’s most significant works, a biographical timeline, a
list of exhibitions and bibliography.
As Sean Henry’s work continues to grow in popularity, this is a
welcome, in-depth analysis of the career, techniques and
methods of a unique and talented artist.
